paper format · APA 7
APA 7 title page format for student papers.
A student title page has seven elements in a fixed order. The running-head rule is simpler than many old examples suggest.
APA requires a title page for every APA Style paper.
APA says, “A title page is required for all APA Style papers.” It also says, “Students should use the student version of the title page unless their instructor or institution has requested they use the professional version.”
put the seven student elements in APA's order.
- 01Paper titleThe title comes first.
- 02Author name(s)List the paper's author or authors.
- 03Author affiliationGive the department and institution.
- 04Course number and namePlace the course details next.
- 05Instructor nameFollow with the instructor's name.
- 06Assignment due dateUse the date format described below.
- 07Page numberPut page number 1 in the page header.
center the title, then separate the author by one blank line.
APA says, “Place the title three to four lines down from the top of the title page. Center it and type it in bold font.” The title uses title case.
For the author line, “Place one double-spaced blank line between the paper title and the author names.” The affiliation is the department and institution, separated by a comma. APA says, “Center the affiliation on the next double-spaced line after the author name(s).”
use a colon in the course line and your country's date format.
Write the course number “followed by a colon and the course name.” For the assignment due date, APA says, “Use the date format commonly used in your country.” The official page shows both examples below.

student papers normally have no running head.
The page number is still required. APA says, “Use the page number 1 on the title page ... in the top right corner of the page header.”
the professional page changes the supporting details.
| element | student title page | professional title page |
|---|---|---|
| Course details | Course number and name | Not included |
| Instructor | Included | Not included |
| Due date | Included | Not included |
| Author note | Not listed as a student element | Added |
| Running head | Not included unless requested | Included without a prefix label |
use the paper's font, margins, and double spacing.
The title page follows the same setup as the rest of the paper. APA accepts several fonts, as long as you use one font throughout the paper:
| type | fonts APA lists | notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sans serif | 12-point Aptos, 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial, or 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode | Your word processor's default font is also acceptable. |
| Serif | 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Georgia, or 10-point Computer Modern | Figures, computer code, and footnotes have their own exceptions. |
Set 1-inch margins on every side of the page. Double-space the whole title page, and add one extra double-spaced blank line between the title and your name. Only the title is bold. If your instructor gives different requirements, APA's own setup guide says to follow the instructor.
compare the page with the official element order.
Check the title page from top to bottom, then use the citation generator and source checker for the separate citations and reference list.
